R.A. 7160, s.410(b): the lupon chairman summons the respondent within the next working day and mediates for up to 15 days from the first meeting; then the pangkat convenes within 3 days and has 15 days, extendable by up to 15 more (s.410(d)–(e)). Filing interrupts prescription, but not for more than 60 days from filing (s.410(c)). Working days are counted Monday to Friday, without local holidays.

Write the facts by date and put the amount in numbers — mediation goes faster when everyone sees the same paper.
Ask for a received copy with the date and time on it. That date starts every count on this page.

The rules, with the source
| What | Deadline | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Summons after filing | Within the next working day | R.A. 7160 (Local Government Code), s.410(b) |
| Mediation by the Punong Barangay | 15 days from the first meeting of the parties | s.410(b) |
| Pangkat ng Tagapagkasundo | Convenes within 3 days of its constitution; settles within 15 days, extendable by up to 15 days | s.410(d), (e) |
| Interruption of prescription | From filing, but not more than 60 days | s.410(c) |
| Repudiation of a settlement | Within 10 days from the settlement, by sworn statement, for fraud, violence or intimidation | s.418 |
| Settlement becomes final | After 10 days, like a court judgment; enforced by the Lupon within 6 months, then in court | s.416, s.417 |
| Going to court | Only with a certification that no settlement was reached (exceptions: detention, habeas corpus, provisional remedies, prescription about to expire) | s.412 |
Parties must appear in person, without lawyers (s.415). Cases outside the barangay's authority are listed in s.408 — for example, disputes with the government, offenses punishable by more than one year or a fine over ₱5,000, and parties living in different cities (unless the barangays adjoin and both agree).
Step by step
What to do, in order
1
Check the right barangay
Same barangay — there. Different barangays in one city — the respondent's barangay. Land — where it is.
2
Fill in the complaint
Who, what, when, how much. Attach receipts, contracts, demand letters, photos.
3
File and pay the fee
At the barangay hall. Ask for a received copy with the date and an official receipt.
4
Attend mediation in person
Bring originals and your witnesses. No lawyers inside — that is the rule.
5
Sign a settlement — or get a certification
If you agree, check the terms before signing. If not, ask for the Certification to File Action.
6
Go to court if needed
With the certification you can file, for example, a small claims case. Mind your own deadline.
Questions
Can I skip the barangay and go straight to court?
Usually no: for disputes within the Lupon's authority, the court needs the certification (s.412). The law makes exceptions, for example when the case would otherwise prescribe.
The respondent did not show up. What now?
Tell the Punong Barangay and ask what will be recorded. If no settlement is reached, ask for the Certification to File Action so you can go to court.
I signed a settlement but I was pressured. Can I take it back?
Yes, within 10 days from the date of the settlement, by a sworn statement before the lupon chairman, if your consent was obtained by fraud, violence or intimidation (s.418).
