Questions
How do I get my bond back in NZ?
Ask your landlord to submit a bond refund request in Bond Hub (or their property management software). You get a notification from Tenancy Services and confirm it; Tenancy Services says the bond is refunded the following day.
Is there still a bond refund form?
Tenancy Services says the bond refund, change of tenant and change of landlord forms are no longer available from 29 June 2026. Refunds go through Bond Hub.
How long does a bond refund take?
Tenants have 12 working days to respond to the landlord's request; once you agree, the refund is paid the following day. A completed application takes up to 10 working days to process.
What if my landlord will not lodge the refund?
Send the follow-up letter, then call Tenancy Services on 0800 836 262 — they can help tenants submit a bond refund application. If you cannot agree, either of you can apply to the Tenancy Tribunal.
What can the landlord take from the bond?
Money owed — for example unpaid rent, water, or damage beyond fair wear and tear. The landlord gets that amount and you get the rest; anything you do not agree to goes to the Tenancy Tribunal.
Is it free? Do I need to sign up?
It is free and you do not need to sign up. With a free account you can save a copy of the letter to your Layers.
