Questions
How does no tax on tips work?
From 2025 through 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from your taxable income on Schedule 1-A, whether or not you itemize. It lowers your federal income tax; Social Security and Medicare still apply.
How much will I save?
Your deduction times the bracket the tips would have been taxed in — often 10% or 12%. The calculator works out your tax with and without the deduction using the 2026 brackets.
Is there an income limit?
The deduction shrinks by $100 for each full $1,000 of modified AGI over $150,000 ($300,000 joint). At $400,000 single income it is gone.
Do DoorDash or Uber tips count?
Only if the occupation is on the IRS list of tipped occupations and the business is not a specified service trade or business; self-employed people cannot deduct more than the net profit of that business.
Do auto-gratuities count?
No. A mandatory service charge added to the bill is not a voluntary tip, so it is not a qualified tip.
Is it free? Do I need to sign up?
It is free and you do not need to sign up: fill in, see the result and download the files. With a free account you can save a copy to your Layers.
