Unemployment benefits — apply in your state, certify each week, appeal on time
Nothing missing before you go.
Tick what you have and see at once what is missing.
Short answer. Each state runs its own program, so rules, amounts and deadlines differ. In California, New York and Pennsylvania you file with the state, then keep certifying to be paid. California gives 30 days to appeal a denial, Pennsylvania 21 days from the determination date.

What does not exist
Be careful with these.
- “There is one federal form”: Each state runs its own claim.
- “You were denied, so it is over”: You can appeal. California and Pennsylvania state the deadline on your notice.
- “Once approved, the money just arrives”: You must keep certifying. California pays only weeks you certified.
