Step by step
What to do, in order
1
Choose your version
Experienced, entry-level or career change — or the short email letter if the application is by email.
2
Match the posting
Copy three requirements from the job ad and answer each with one concrete example.
3
Add numbers
Results with numbers (time saved, sales, customers, people trained) make the letter credible.
4
Check the details
Company name, hiring manager’s name and job ID — twice.
5
Send and follow up
Save as PDF with a clear file name; follow up about a week later if you hear nothing.
Questions
What is the difference between a cover letter and a CV letter?
Usually none: “CV letter” is the name used in the UK, India and many other countries for the cover letter that goes with a CV or résumé. In the US it is called a cover letter.
How long should a cover letter be?
One page: three or four short paragraphs, roughly 250–400 words. Recruiters skim, so the first two sentences should say which job and why you fit.
Can I write a cover letter with no experience?
Yes. Version B uses school projects, part-time jobs, volunteering and certificates as evidence. Show the skills the job needs, not job titles.
How do I explain a career change?
Version C names the change in the first sentence, then shows two or three transferable skills and the training you have done for the new field.
Who do I address it to if there is no name?
Look for the hiring manager on the company site or LinkedIn. If you cannot find one, “Dear Hiring Team,” is fine.
Should I send it as Word or PDF?
PDF keeps the layout, unless the employer asks for Word. The template downloads as Word so you can edit it first.
Can I see whether the employer opened it?
If you send it from your free Layers space, you see when it is opened and how long it is read, and you can set yourself a follow-up reminder.
