Statutory redundancy · €600 ceiling
Your statutory redundancy lump sum — years of service, weeks' pay and the €600 ceiling
Your start date, your last day, your gross weekly pay and any lay-off days in the last three years. You see your reckonable service, the weeks' pay due and the tax-free lump sum — and a letter asking your employer to confirm it in writing.
- Send the letter: ask your employer to confirm the amount and the payment date in writing, with a statement of how it was worked out.
- Check the rest of your final pay: notice or pay in lieu (1–8 weeks by service), holiday pay for leave not taken, and any top-up.
- Not paid? Form RP77 to your employer, then the Department of Social Protection; a dispute goes to the Workplace Relations Commission within a year.
Arithmetic as in the Department of Social Protection's worked examples: days from start to end inclusive, minus non-reckonable days, ÷ 365 to two decimals; 2 weeks' pay per year plus 1 bonus week; weekly pay up to €600; no statutory payment under 104 weeks' service. Minimum notice from the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Act 1973, s. 4. Leaves out service before age 16, average overtime and pay changes; an estimate, not legal advice.

National law, the same everywhere in the State. Many employers pay more on top (a 'top-up'); only the statutory amount is a legal right unless your contract or a collective agreement says otherwise.

Questions
How is statutory redundancy calculated in Ireland?
Two weeks' gross pay for every year of service plus one bonus week. Part of a year counts in days ÷ 365, and weekly pay is counted up to €600. Example: 23 years and 40 days at €600 a week = 47.22 weeks × €600 = €28,332.
Is redundancy pay tax-free in Ireland?
The statutory lump sum is tax-free. Pay in lieu of notice and holiday pay are taxed as normal pay, and part of an extra (ex gratia) payment may be taxable — check Revenue's guidance on lump sums.
What is the redundancy cap in Ireland?
€600 a week, or €31,200 a year. If you earn €800 a week, your statutory redundancy is still worked out on €600.
Do part-time employees get redundancy?
Yes, if you have 104 weeks' continuous service and pay Class A PRSI — the hours don't matter. Your normal weekly pay is used.
What if my employer doesn't pay?
Write to them first. Then apply to your employer on form RP77; if the employer can't pay or is insolvent, the Department of Social Protection can pay from the Social Insurance Fund. A dispute goes to the Workplace Relations Commission within one year.
Is it free? Do I need to sign up?
It's free and you don't need an account: fill it in and download. With a free account you can save a copy to your Layers and come back to it later.
