Questions

Is two weeks’ notice required by law?

Not under federal law in most US jobs. It is a custom; a contract, offer letter or union agreement can require a specific period.

How do I count two weeks?

Usually 14 calendar days from the day you hand in the letter, so your last day falls on the same weekday two weeks later. Check whether your employer counts working days.

Can I give notice by email?

Yes — version B is ready. Copy HR and keep the sent email as your record.

What if I cannot give a full two weeks?

Use version C: state the date, apologize briefly, give a short reason if you want, and offer to help with the handover.

What if my employer tells me to leave right away?

That can happen in at-will employment. Ask HR in writing about pay for the notice period, your final paycheck and benefits.

How do I prove when I gave notice?

Send it from Layers with tracking: you see when it was opened and for how long, and you can set a reminder to follow up.
