Put in the one-time gear, monthly diapers and feeding, months of childcare, your share of the birth costs and any unpaid leave: you see the first-year total and what to save each month until baby's first birthday, with a registry and paperwork checklist. No sign-up.

  1. Ask your HR about FMLA eligibility and any paid leave.

Questions

How much does a baby cost in the first year?

It depends most on childcare, your health plan and how much gear you buy new. Put in your own numbers: the calculator multiplies the monthly costs by the months and adds the one-time items.

How much should I save before the baby comes?

At least the one-time gear and your share of the birth costs. The plan spreads the whole first year from today to the first birthday; the Excel file shows each month.

Is maternity leave paid in the US?

Federal FMLA leave is unpaid but job-protected for eligible employees, up to 12 weeks. Paid leave depends on your employer and your state.

When do I add the baby to my insurance?

The birth is a special enrollment event: employer plans must give at least 30 days, Marketplace plans 60 days. Do it right away.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up?

It is free and you do not need to sign up: fill in, see the result and download the files. With a free account you can save a copy to your Layers.
