What your employer owes you — terminal benefit, notice and untaken leave

Your first and last day, your average monthly salary of the last 12 months and why the contract ended. You see the multiple under Article 31, the terminal benefit, notice compensation and leave pay — and a letter to claim them.

  1. Terminal benefits are due within 7 working days of the dismissal (Art. 31).
  2. Send the claim letter from the Word file and ask for your certificate of rendered services (Art. 34).
  3. If you cannot agree, ask the labour inspector of your district for help.

Arithmetic under Law N° 66/2018: Art. 31 — 2× average monthly salary under 5 years of service, 3× for 5–10, 4× for 10–15, 5× for 15–20, 6× for 20–25, 7× over 25, after at least 12 consecutive months; retirement the same (Art. 32). Notice compensation = salary for the notice period (15 days under 1 year, 30 days over); leave = days × average salary ÷ 22 (the divisor is practice, not law). Minimums — your contract may give more. Amounts before tax. Not legal advice.

Questions

How do I calculate terminal benefits in Rwanda?

Average monthly salary × the multiple for your years of service: 2 under 5 years, 3 for 5–10, 4 for 10–15, 5 for 15–20, 6 for 20–25, 7 over 25 (Law 66/2018, Art. 31). With RWF 450,000 and 8.67 years of service, that is 3 × 450,000 = RWF 1,350,000.

Who gets terminal benefits?

An employee with at least 12 consecutive months whose contract ends for economic reasons, technological transfer or sickness — and, in the same amount, a retiring employee (Art. 32). Not for resignation, gross misconduct or the normal end of a fixed-term contract.

What if I was dismissed without notice?

Notice is at least 15 days under one year and 30 days over one year (Art. 24). Without it, the employer owes compensation (Art. 25); the calculator counts the salary for the notice period.

When must the employer pay?

Within seven working days of the dismissal (Art. 31). At the end of the contract you also receive your final pay and a certificate of rendered services (Art. 34).

Is unpaid leave added?

Yes: annual leave not taken is paid as compensation, even before 12 months of work (Art. 49). The calculator values a day at the average salary ÷ 22 working days — the law does not fix the divisor, so you can change it.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up?

It’s free and you don’t need an account: fill it in and download. With a free account you can save a copy to your Layers and come back to it later.
