Questions

What is the notice period in Denmark?

For salaried employees (funktionærer), from the employer: 1 month in the first 6 months, then 3 months, 4 after nearly 3 years, 5 after nearly 6 years and 6 months after nearly 9 years — always to the end of a month. If you resign, your notice is 1 month.

When do I get severance pay in Denmark?

When you are dismissed after 12 years' unbroken service in the same company: 1 month's pay; after 17 years: 3 months' pay (s. 2a). Service is counted to the leaving date. With DKK 42,000 and 12 years 9 months at leaving it is DKK 42,000.

How do I write a resignation letter in Denmark?

In writing, to your manager, with your job title, the notice and your last working day. Hand it in by the last day of the month. The Word file has a ready template; the Danish page has the same letter in Danish.

What if the dismissal is unfair?

After at least 1 year, a dismissal without reasonable grounds can give compensation (s. 2b): at most half the notice, up to 3 months' pay if you are 30 or over, 4 after 10 years and 6 after 15 years. It is settled by negotiation or in court — contact your union.

Does this apply to hourly paid workers?

The Act covers salaried employees (funktionærer); hourly paid workers usually follow their collective agreement. Check your contract.
