Questions
How much tax is taken out of a bonus?
If it is paid separately, federal income tax is usually withheld at a flat 22%, plus 6.2% Social Security (up to the $184,500 wage base), 1.45% Medicare and your state's withholding. Many people keep roughly 60–75%.
Why is my bonus taxed so high?
It usually is not taxed higher — it is withheld at a flat rate. When you file, the bonus is taxed with the rest of your income at your bracket; if 22% was too much, the difference comes back as part of your refund.
Does my 401(k) lower the tax on a bonus?
It lowers federal and most state income tax withholding, but not Social Security and Medicare. Check that your plan takes deferrals from bonuses.
What is my state's bonus tax rate?
It depends on the state. Illinois withholds its flat 4.95%; California withholds 10.23% on bonuses; Texas and Florida have no state income tax. Ask payroll or your state's tax agency.
